DPCI Implements K4 for Hanley Wood

Hanley Wood Business Media Enlists DPCI to Streamline Editorial Production for its Portfolio of Magazines

New York, NY - Sep 24, 2007 - DPCI, a provider of integrated technology solutions for organizations that need to publish content to Web, print, and mobile channels, today announced the rollout of SoftCare’s K4 Publishing System at Hanley Wood Business Media, the premier media company serving housing and construction.

Based in Washington D.C., Hanley Wood Business Media publishes more than 30 residential and commercial construction titles, with a total print circulation of 1.4 million through its award-winning magazines and more than 20 million readers online. Founded in 1976, Hanley Wood has grown into a media giant with revenues of over $250 million.

Hanley Wood management believed that a number of technical and workflow challenges were impacting Hanley Wood’s editorial and production operations. Though all of the magazines previously used MS Word for editing and QuarkXPress for layout, each respective title had a slightly different workflow. Moreover, the proofing and layout processes were prone to errors and delays.

Hanley Wood retained DPCI to assist in identifying challenges in the various workflow processes, document best practices in editorial and production workflow, then implement K4, Adobe InDesign and Adobe InCopy to reinforce the improvements.

With the K4 implementation, Hanley Wood Business Media’s staff, made up of more than 130 designers, production people and editors located throughout the country, is now able to collaborate more effectively, improving the interaction among the various staff members.

“The conversion to InDesign and K4 has revolutionized the way our editorial and art teams work, but the transition hasn’t been easy, said Sal Alfano, Editorial Director at Hanley Wood Business Media. “Throughout the conversion, we have relied on DPCI to help us through the rough spots.”

“The K4 system allows the editorial staff at Hanley Wood to shorten production cycles as well as allow managing editors the power to track the status of current work in real time,” stated Tracy Gardner, Vice President of Client Services at DPCI. “The implementation has allowed Hanley Wood to refine their processes and to properly assess their actual production needs, which translates to faster time-to-market with content and lower production costs.”
