Just found this article by Ron Miller of Fierce Content Management, in which he covers some of Dries Buytaert's stated goals for Drupal 8.
With respect to Dries' stated vision of multi-channel goals for Drupal 8, much of this can and will happen with Drupal 7. In fact, the team at DPCI has been working on print workflow automation by integrating Drupal with InDesign and InDesign server. We will be presenting our initial work at the New Jersey Drupalcamp on February 5th this year.
With respect to HTML5 theme availability in D7, that list will continue to grow. This will enable companies that use Drupal more opportuntiies to deliver content to multiple devices without the need for mobile/tablet app development.
I agree wholeheartedly that D8 can very much be about administration functionality, improved configuration, and continued scaling/performance gains for enterprise deployments. D7 is still a young version of the platform, and the Drupal community is still inventing some cool stuff around it. Let us see what 2012 brings for starters!
