In yesterday's blog I posited that technology job seekers in the media and entertainment vertical market that my company servces can improve their chances of finding work through the use of social networking tools like blogging or twitter.com. After some reflection this morning it occurred to me that it may seem that I was reducing the challenge of finding work in a difficult economy. This was not my intention, and I don't want to appear insensitive. As I mentioned yesterday, I'm concerned about friends of mine that are out of work.
My key point is that the more a person can express their value using available 'stages' to do so, chances are improved that somebody who is 'listening' needs that kind of talent at their company.

Some thoughts as I procrastinate putting away the good china and silverware . . .
Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook are the most useful and popular of the social media tools out there, in addition to having a blog which you market to your specific audiences. . . .But that doesn't mean that you don't do anything else, or that anyone is suggesting that you stop networking the OLD WAY, face to face, by email, by phone, whatever. . . .Social Media are just ADDITIONAL tools . . .We still need to attend networking events, go to seminars, conferences, send emails, forward articles, introduce people, just call to say hello and give or get an update. . .If you are smart about it, you will avail yourself of what you can, of all that is at your disposal that would market you effectively . . .as they say ... BRAND YOU!
Hmmm, I guess you can call those social networking tools a "stage," which is not surprising considering your entertainment background. ;-) Yes, they are a type of stage, a medium, a forum, or rather . . they all are media and fora . . .Hey, what can I tell you, 6 years of Latin! . . .
Yet, I think that if you consider them as tools that will help you expose, display, and distribute your chosen messages: "These are my beliefs, my background, my experience, my ideas, my connections, my abilities, my thoughts, my successes, . . ." AND YOU ALSO USE the tools TO HELP THOSE AROUND YOU: providing helpful information, connecting people and organizations, creating synergy, THEN you will succeed in capturing the attention, as you say, of those who are "listening" and need that kind of talent at their, or even at a friend's company. In other words, PAY IT FORWARD. . .as suggested in one of my favorite books: One Phonecall Away . . . http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B000FZDKWU . . .
My background includes public relations at Grey, an MBA from Columbia, my own service helping people with their job search writing resumes and cover letters, owning 5 businesses with partners, and now social media consulting . . .
And so, I come at it from all angles. . . You are right to try and suggest helpful tools to those who may otherwise ignore the potential of this new technology and new ways to communicate and stay in contact/top of mind with people. There are many who may think social networking doesn't apply to them . . . they don't work in a tech-related position, let alone company or industry. I hear that ALL THE TIME . . . NO MATTER! It cuddent hoit to consider it and MAYBE even try it out.
Joe, you need not apologize, but it is a good idea to clarify that people should use these apps as helpful tools to incorporate into their lives, as appropriate. . . Especially in this economy, we all need the extra exposure where the more people know you and know that you are looking for employment, or even as you continue to develop your business and/or career as a industry/thought leader, connector, etc, the better off you will be.
It's no longer only what you know, nor even WHO you know, it's also about who knows about YOU.
