Here is an announcement from Softcare, a partner organization of DPCI (Link Here). They have been working on their next-generation editorial workflow engine codenamed "Xanthos". A few additional points:
Xanthos will be a workflow engine and as such does not replace K4 but in fact will be an underlying technology. Softcare is not sharing any details with us on how that will work at this time. We are being told that Xanthos will appear in an upcoming version of K4 Publishing System and it is our understanding that K4 customers who are under maintenance will be able to take advantage of that technology at no additional cost.
My guess is that Xanthos is going to work with different relational database platforms, which is messaging we have seen elsewhere with K4's next generation platform. Also Xanthos will likely have a more open development platform with web services to exploit integrations with various digital asset management and Web content management systems. I wish I had a crystal ball for what Softcare is planning around integration with Adobe CS4, Version Cue, and Adobe Air/FLEX, but alas, I'm not an insider on this one and the press release was somewhat vague.
From our standpoint, DPCI will make investments in getting our developers trained in Xanthos (and next-generation K4) API's and web service calls. Of course, as always, our integration staff will be trained in the installation, configuration and training on those technologies.
Softcare will be releasing more details about Xanthos at the IFRA Expo in Amsterdam in October. MEI will be holding its US user group in early 2009 and we will all hopefully have much more information to share at that time.
