Tool Tips: InCopy Galley & Layout View at the same time

I'm using the image below to show two things. First, we see how awesome it is that InCopy CS4 finally shows tables in Galley view and second, we see how I am able to view both the galley and layout view of this single document at the same time.

Let me start by explaining how tables work in InCopy CS4. As you will see from the image above, the honey comb icon that was displayed in place of a table in previous versions of InCopy is now gone. Instead, in InCopy CS4 we see the full contents of the table. The layout of the table shows divisions of each row, with each column getting a small seperator line. While it is necessary to use the galley (or story) view to edit any tables that have overset information, it can still be an easier task to edit visible tables cells in the layout view.

Of course, to get the best of both worlds you could always display galley view, story view and layout view side-by-side as I have done in the image above. This is a request I often hear of in my InCopy training classes. "I love galley view, but I feel like I am constantly switching to layout view." Then I explain that you can actually view both at once! In fact, this feature has been around at least since InCopy CS2.

To get the dual view. First go to your Window menu and select ARRANGE>NEW WINDOW. InCopy will then open up a second instance of the current document open.

Then go back to the Window menu and select ARRANGE>TILE. This will then set the two views side by side. You can switch one view to galley or story and then set the other view to layout. Very handy! You can zoom in and out ont he laytou view and watch how changes are updated from edits in the galley view. If you want to return to a single view, just close one of the view documents (you don't need to save).

Fun tip, for one of my favorite pieces of software. Let me know in the comments below if you have any InCopy tips or questions!

Looking to leverage InCopy into our current DAM workflow but can't figure out how. For example, after a designer completes layout and is ready for review, he or she currently uploads the InDesign document to our MediaBin DAM. But with InCopy, designer is required to generate Stories and store them on a shared file server. Trying to figure out how we can use MediaBin as the shared file server but the log-in credentials seem to be a roadblock. Ideas?
Hi Kevin, there are a couple of different ways the tools can be integrated together. Send me an email or let me know if you would like me to contact you to discuss further.
