The Technology Review (MIT)

The Technology Review, a progressive monthly magazine published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, sought a way to improve upon its editorial and production workflow. Essentially practicing what it preaches, The Technology Review looked for an innovative approach to improve productivity as well as the quality of the magazine and other materials.

DPCI was retained to assist the Technology Review's management in enhancing editorial and production workflow. DPCI further implemented an InDesign CS/InCopy workflow solution called SmartConnection Enterprise to allow internal and external contributors to more effectively produce content for the Review.

Another requirement The Technology Review had was to easily move articles from the magazine to its content management solution. Technology Review had been using Atomz content management for some time, and needed a mechanism to populate the system with print-ready articles and images.

DPCI built SmartExtract atop SmartConnection Enterprise to allow Technology Review staff a way to push multiple articles and associated images up to Atomz through a simple browser interface. SmartExtract takes InCopy articles, passes them through an XSLT processor and transforms the content to the right XML format that can be imported dynamically into Atomz.

DPCI further helped The Technology Review to establish a PDF workflow. Now, production staff ship pre-flighted PDF files to the printer and have reduced rework and prepress costs as well.

The Result: DPCI has brought innovative software and sound workflow processes to the Technology Review, which now not only leads the technology publishing world in content but also in its approach to publishing.
