Thomson Reuters Healthcare is the leading provider of decision support solutions that help organizations across the healthcare industry improve clinical and business performance. They publish a series of drug reference books for healthcare professionals. These books consist of information on thousands of drugs that is stored in a database that they maintain.

Thomson Reuters Healthcare contracted DPCI to develop a Product Creation Tool (PCT). This PCT gives users the ability to create various publications using an exported data set from their database. Drugs represented in their data set can be searched and edited to create custom sponsored or modified books. Once modified, the data can then be used to publish the books using Typefi. Typefi is an InDesign server solution that offers special tools for creating flexible layout templates, and then flowing XML into those templates. DPCI takes XML output from Thomson Reuters Healthcare’s Product Selection Tool, and then using the PCT applies a custom XML transformation to the data so that the data will flow correctly into the Typefi templates. Users can choose their data set, make any edits if necessary, and then kick off a Typefi job right from the PCT. The Typefi Server in conjunction with Adobe InDesign Server composes the book automatically, resulting in a print ready PDF.

Project highlights:

  • Product Creation Tool operates through web interface
  • Input XML can be edited
  • XML and Typefi template are selected and a job is published
  • PDF and InDesign files are final result
