This is a glossary of Wiki Terms.
Object Code - The result of putting source code through a compiler, object code is a sequence of instructions that a processor can understand. Proprietary software vendors typically deliver object code to customers as opposed to source code, since they do not want the original programming modified.
Open Source - An ontology of producing and maintaining software, the code of which is made available to the users of the software. An Open Source product is the culmination of the voluntary work of a community of developers.
Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) - A standard manufacturing term where a component or series of components is/are
integrated to make a larger whole. In the software business, products are
regularly OEM'ed by vendors of Web content management or digital asset
management systems so as to extend the functionality of their products.
A short number of examples of OEM opportunities in the content software
space include:
ImageMagick: Regularly OEM'ed (or embedded) into digital asset management and
Web content management systems for image transformations. Adobe Graphics Server
was being used for this purpose a few years ago but it has fallen somewhat out
of favor due to his processor-intense needs
FlipFactory (by Telestream): Regularly OEM'ed by vendors to automate
transcoding of video assets
InDesign Server (Adobe): A popular OEM product that allows companies to
dynamically create print-ready materials from a central content repository.
Outtake - In photography, the shots that have been taken that have not been selected for
publication (either in Print, Web, or another medium). Usually after a photo
shoot of any kind there are dozens if not hundreds or thousands of images that
go unused. At many publishers this is an issue since the value of those assets
is not being realized.
The situation is complicated in several ways:
1. Freelance photographers often retain their legal rights to outtakes, so
the publisher needs to acquire the rights to use any outtake asset
2. Regardless of whether a publisher owns an outtake or not, the company
usually has difficulty finding the assets since they have not been cataloged
properly. Typically outtakes remain on the DVD/CD that they were sent in on.
That digital media is often not properly indexed or stored, so no one generally
knows that any relevant outtake existed without browsing them again.
Publishers have been investing in digital asset management systems to tackle
the issue of outtake storage, however the digital rights issue must still be
tackled. The other issue is whether those outtakes can be monetized at all,
since if they are not reusable, then storing them would be akin to cluttering
the attic of a house with unusable 'stuff'.
Overlay - "Overlay" is a term used in the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite. When a folio is built for an application on a tablet device, an image is made of all the text and graphics. All ineractive content is "Overlayed" on top of this image to produce the interactivity.
