Wiki

This is a glossary of Wiki Terms.

Scraping Content - Manually or semi-automatically extracting information from a data source, usually for re-use, e.g. copy-and-pasting content from one content format into another.

Semantic Web - An evolutionary stage of the World Wide Web where plain-language information is structured in a way that machines can effectively interpret, synthesize, and derive conclusions.

Server switch - An appliance that enables load balancing on a server cluster. In the event that a server becomes overloaded or unavailable, the switch will direct traffic to other servers in order to maintain site performance and uptime.

Site stickiness - In Internet parlance, site stickiness is the tendency for a Website to hold the attention of a reader. Frequently individuals that surf the Internet bounce out of a site within one or two page views.

If a site has great content or engaging interactive functionality that is meaningful to that reader, then the person will view many more pages. If an audience of readers follows this trend, then the site is said to be 'sticky'.

Source Code - The original programming work created by a developer before it is compiled. Once source code is compiled into object code it becomes very difficult to modify. This is why it is a best practice for organizations to properly store and secure source code as the permanent record of programming work so that it may be modified in the future.

Spy Shot - A sneak peek photograph of a future product that has not been released to the market. Frequently captured opportunistically by a photographer on location without permission.
