Wiki

This is a glossary of Wiki Terms.

Web Standards - The guidelines and technical specifications that determine best
practices in web development. Primarily, web standards are derived from
the reccomendations of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The goal of
adhering to web standards is to produce valid code (html, CSS, and
Javascript) that is semantically accurate and accessible to all web
browsers (from screen readers, to moblie devices, to desktop
applications).

WebTop Publishing - The practice of accessing print design templates and creating new print design documents directly from a Web browser, without the need for QuarkXPress or InDesign. WebTop publishing software requires a server-side design application such as QuarkServer, InDesign Server, or proprietary software such as PageFlex. These products interact with Web applications to render WYSIWYG versions of templates. Users fill in form data for text and images that need to appear on the page, then submit those variables through the Web application, which in turn passes the variables to the design application.

WebTop Publishing can also offer the opportunity to drive file versions from a data set, be it from a relational database or from an XML or delimited file. The best products on market allow for both 'untouched by human hands' creation of file versions as well as self-serve portals for users to create their own versions of files. Also see Database Publishing.

Windows Service - A Windows Service is an executable for the Microsoft Windows operating system that performs specific functions and is designed to run without user intervention.
